Finding Good People is Hard – My 7 Top Tips

Hiring the right person for your business can be a daunting task, but with the right approach, you will get great outcomes that will contribute to your ongoing success. Here are seven top tips to help you hire successfully:

1.     Be Clear About the Skills and Attributes You Need
Take time to define the specific skills and personal traits you’re looking for. A well-thought-out job description will attract the right candidates and guide your decision-making.

  1. Target the Right Market
Ensure your job advertisement reaches the right audience. Use relevant platforms and job boards, and tailor your message to attract the best talent.

  2. Invest Time in Reviewing Applications
Carefully screen resumes and take your time to review each application. Focus on the most qualified candidates, regardless of their personal profile, background or experience.

  3. Interview for Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and Test for Skills
While technical skills are important, emotional intelligence is often just as crucial. During the interview, pay careful attention to the candidates manner and communication style and the quality of their questions about your business. Test their technical skills with a relevant task or tasks.

  4. Check References Thoroughly
Always call referees and dig as deep as you can with open-ended questions. The key final questions: “Would you re-employ this person and is there anything else I should know about them?” will give you valuable insights.

  5. Clarify Expectations from the Start
Be upfront about the role, expectations, and performance standards. Ask the candidate to confirm their understanding to avoid future misunderstandings before making your offer.

  6. Make the Offer and Do It Right
Once you've found the right fit, make a clear, detailed offer, including role responsibilities, performance objectives, and key policies. Ensure thorough onboarding and training and always follow through with expectations.

By following these steps, you’ll significantly improve your chances of hiring the right candidate for your team. “You have to dig a lot of ground to find gold nuggets, but you will find them”!
